Beginner Russian Twist

Choose this exercise if you want to build gentle core rotation strength and learn how to twist from your torso — not your shoulders — with full control.

Sitting tall with your feet on the floor, you lean back slightly and rotate your torso side to side while keeping your hips still.
This beginner version removes the balance challenge and weight so you can focus on clean rotation, strong bracing, and controlled movement. It trains your obliques, improves torso mobility, and helps you build the stability needed for more advanced core rotations later on — all without straining your back or hip flexors.
